Catching Colin's Eye
You smooth down the skirt of your dress as Adam helps you from the limo. You put on a tight smile at all the flashbulbs going off to capture his arrival. He slides an arm around your waist. "An hour, two at most, I promise Love," he whispers to you as he waves to the press.
You enter the Gala half-blinded, trying to blink away the camera-flashes after-images. Adam hands you a glass of champagne. "You know, I've never understood why you hate going to these things," he says as you make your way into the crowd. "You'd think being amongst all these beautiful famous women and knowing you're the prettiest one here would make you smile just a little."
You grin up at him. "I'm holding you to two hours Adam. No matter how sweet you try to be."
"But I'm welcome to continue to try?"
"With lines like that last one? Sure, why not." You hand off your empty glass to a passing waiter. Adam reaches to get you another. "No thanks, one's about my limit in these heels. I don't know why you enjoy these bashes so much. It's not as if we ever run into anyone int...oh my..." Adam follows your eyes as your sentence trails off. He sees what has rendered you speechless is a dashing looking man in a tuxedo. Adam's gaze comes back to your face. He notices your slight blush.
"Well be a little more blatant about it for God's sake," he says, tossing back the rest of his drink.
"Excuse me?" You look up at him. "You're jealous? I have to watch you eyeing and flirting with beautiful women how many times...per day?"
"That doesn't mean I'm used to you doing it," he pouts.
"No, but it does mean that the few times I do, you get to grin and bear it like I do with you. Doesn't it? Unless of course you don't trust me as much as I trust you."
"Of course I trust you Love. I mean it's not as if he's going to come over here and..."
"Hello?" You and Adam turn to see that the man in question has stopped directly in front of you.
"Hi," you smile at him.
"Allow me to introduce myself, my name is Colin Tromans. I'm a director. I don't believe I've had the pleasure of seeing your work Miss."
"Oh, I'm not an actress. I'm just here with my boyfriend."
Adam extends his hand. "Adam Klaus."
Colin shakes it. "Ah yes. Conjurer or something like that right?"
"Something like that yes." Adam grits his teeth. You are trying hard not to giggle.
Colin turns his attention back to you. "Just because you're not an actress, doesn't mean you couldn't be." He reaches into his pocket and pulls out a business card. "This is the number of my production company." He takes out a pen and scribbles on the back. "And this is my direct line. It'll put you right through to my secretary. Call me on Monday morning and we'll see what we can do." He hands it to you.
"Thanks. I just might do that." You give your most charming smile.
Adam clears his throat. "Yes, thank you. Now if you'll excuse us, we have to be going." As Adam takes hold of your arm to lead you away, Colin takes your hand and kisses it.
"Pleasure to have met you," his gaze is heavy with meaning and it makes you blush even more. Adam tugs a little more forcefully and you disappear into the crowd.
At home in bed, you are trying to read but keep getting distracted by Adam's incessant "Pay attention to me" sighing. Soon, it becomes too much to ignore and you put the book down to look into his wounded puppy dog eyes. "I take it you wanted to talk?"
"No. Whatever gave you that idea?"
You set the book aside on your nightstand. "No, you want to talk. Let's talk."
"Why don't you just get Colin Tromans to talk to you then?"
You smile. "I could I suppose. I do have his phone number." He stands up and walks to the window. Your smile fades and you look down and play with a thread in the bedspread. "You don't think I'd be a very good movie star do you?"
"I think you'd be wonderful at anything you tried. I just don't think he thinks that. I think he's thinking about getting you into bed."
"Like I am right now with you?"
He turns back to you with a gentle smile. "Well...yes."
"And you don't think I was smart enough to figure that out myself? Maybe he just made me feel pretty. Maybe I took it for what it was but it still made me feel really good."
He makes his way back to the bed and sits beside you. "I don't make you feel that way?"
"No you do. A lot actually. It was just sorta..."
"Nice to know you can still catch someone's eye besides mine?"
"I guess."
He smiles and creeps forward, brushing your lips with a kiss. "Nice to have me reminded that you're with me by choice and if I don't appreciate that, someone else will?"
You lower your eyes and grin. "Maybe."
"And perhaps I should show you just how much I do appreciate you?" He embraces you and kisses your neck.
"Couldn't hurt." Your eyes meet. His mouth slips into a smile as he leans in and kisses you once again.
