Guardian Angel
"Adam! Nooo!" You toss and turn in your sleep, thrashing in the sheets as your nightmare torments you.
"Love?" Adam, wearing only pajama bottoms, dashes into the room as he wipes the remainder of his shaving cream from his face with a washcloth. He tosses the towel into the laundry basket and crawls onto the bed beside you.
"NOOO!!!!!" You scream into the room and begin to cry. He brings you against his chest and gently shakes you.
"Love wake up. It's all right. I'm here. Wake up now?"
Your eyes snap open and you frantically reach for him in the dark. He hushes and rocks you as you clutch to him and cry against his shoulder. He strokes your hair and patiently waits for you to calm down.
"What's wrong love? What did you dream?"
"Don't go to the theater today Adam," you whisper. "Please?"
He kisses your forehead. "You know that I have to Love."
"But...something...something happened. God. There was so much blood. They...they wouldn't let me near you. You were so hurt. You were calling for me and they held me back from you. Then you got so quiet. I...I couldn't tell if you were...were..."
"Shh, it's all right." He kisses your forehead again. "It was only a dream."
As dawn's rays begin to lighten the sky outside, you pull back to look into his eyes. "It felt like more than that. Please Adam. Don't go?"
He smiles and rubs his thumb against your cheek. "Get dressed and come with me today then? You can keep an eye on me." Adam kisses the top of your head and goes back to the bathroom.
You pull your knees up to your chest and wrap your arms around them. You lay your head on your knees and sigh. "That's what happened though. In my dream..."
You are not having fun at the theater. Your stomach has been in knots all day and every time they rig Adam up in each new trick you feel a little sicker. He keeps coming over to you, snuggling and kissing you between set-ups, reminding you "It's only rehearsal." But it was only rehearsal in your dream too.
Near noon, Adam dismisses the staff for lunch. He comes to your seat at the side of the stage. "Fancy some lunch Love?"
You shake your head. "My stomach is too upset. I can't eat."
He takes your hand and pulls you to your feet. Then he embraces you and gives you a long slow kiss. "You have to eat something. Tell you what, I'll order you something light that won't hurt your stomach all right?" You nod your head. He kisses you once more than moves off to his dressing room.
As you are about to start after him, you hear a scraping noise from the other side of the stage. You look up to see Jonathan pushing a tall glass box into the center stage area. Your blood freezes. That was the trick that went wrong in your nightmare.
You approach it slowly. Jonathan smiles at you as he walks to a table a few feet away to retrieve some tools. Your hand reaches out and touches the glass. You drag your hand down the glass' surface and find a line near the bottom. You swallow hard and very lightly push against the glass just above the fracture. With a loud crack, the entire booth shatters, raining glass at your feet.
You scream and lean away. Jonathan drops his tools and grabs hold of you to pull you further away. Adam drops his cell phone at his dressing room door and runs to your side.
You are trembling, white as a sheet, and staring at the booth. Adam reaches you and grabs your upper arms. "Are you okay??"
You nod slowly as your knees give out from under you. Adam catches you and lifts you into his arms. As he does so, he and Jonathan notice a gash on your ankle. "Jonathan, find a first aid kit?"
The curly-haired genius nods and runs out into the hall. Adam carries you into his dressing room and lays you on his sofa. He brushes your hair out of your face. "Love, are you hurt? Anywhere besides your ankle?"
You shake your head slowly. "No, I don't think so. It's just like what I saw in my dream. Only you were inside when it broke and you were cut to shreds."
Jonathan enters and begins treating the wound on your leg. "So you broke the booth so I wouldn't be hurt?"
"No she didn't." Adam looks to Jonathan. "I saw her. She barely touched it. If there was a crack in it that was that sensitive to pressure...I don't even want to think about it. I think she just saved your life."
When Adam turns back to you, you are smiling. Jonathan puts a bandage on your ankle and then leaves the two of you alone. Adam leans you up, sits on the couch, and pulls you onto his lap. He takes your face in his hands and kisses you deeply. "You could have been killed."
You gently stroke his cheek. "But I wasn't. And because of it, neither were you. I think you have a guardian angel out there that warned me about this in time."
He slides his arm around your waist and smiles. "I think I have my guardian angel right here." As he holds you tight, he kisses you once more...
