Giles

Music of the Night

by GylzGirl

Rupert Giles' Citroen sits parked near the east perimeter of the Sunnydale Cemetery. You are sitting in a velvet evening gown on its hood, dangling your feet over the side and loosely holding a crucifix across your lap. You had tickets for the theater for over a month and of course, on your way to the car, Xander came running up saying Buffy was having trouble with a big greasy demon at the graveyard and needed Giles.

You are forcing yourself to go through your mental mantra. It's thanks to Buffy that Giles even ever came to Sunnydale for you to meet and fall in love with. And you'd rather die than see anything happen to her. Sometimes though, the timing of this whole monster hunting thing just blows.

You hear footsteps approaching your direction. You tighten your grip on the cross and lift your eyes. It's Rupert, smiling bashfully, hair tussled, glasses askew, and tuxedo covered in yellow demon slime.

"Demon vanquished?"

He nods. "I-Indeed."

"Buffy okay?"

"Very much so. On her way to the Bronze I shouldn't wonder. She apologizes for ruining our evening...not to mention my suit."

"Hey, it's okay." You hand him the crucifix and slide down off of the car. "Who wanted to see dumb old Phantom of the Opera anyway?"

Rupert moves to put his arm around your shoulders, then remembers the slime and slips his hands in his pockets. "You did, for a very long time. We'll get tickets for next week all right?"

You open the door to his car. "Tonight was the last night. It doesn't matter. Let's just go home. I'm tired." You climb in the car and see an undefinable expression pass over Rupert's face. He gets into the driver's seat and you drive back to his place in silence.

Once inside, you both climb quietly up the stairs. You change into your nightgown and Rupert stands by the door to the bathroom. "I'm um, I'm just going to have a shower." You nod. Rupert sighs and then turns to enter the bathroom.

"Rupert wait."

He stops and turns. "Yes Love?"

You approach and touch a clean spot on his jacket sleeve. "I'm not mad. I'm disappointed because I really wanted to see this, and I wanted to see it with you. But I will get over it. I do understand that what you do needs to be done, and that you are the only ones who can do it. I'm proud of you for that. And I'm not mad at you."

He smiles warmly and tries to put his arms around you, then remembers and gestures helplessly.

You grin widely. "Go take your shower. That gunk is starting to reek." He moves into the bathroom and shuts the door. You turn out the lights, save the lamp on his nightstand, and crawl into bed.

You lay there for a few moments listening to the water running in the shower and then smile. You get up out of the bed and remove your nightgown, slipping into the bathroom.

You silently pull back the curtain and get in behind Rupert. You slide your arms around his middle. At first, he startles at your touch, then relaxes into it, placing his arms over yours. "Hello Love."

"Hey. You missed a spot."

"Where?"

You lightly trail your finger across his bare hip. "Here."

He turns to face you and kisses you thoroughly, pressing his body tightly to your own. "You know, I think I heard that the play is still running in San Francisco. What do you say I find out and we make a weekend of it? This weekend?"

"Can the Hellmouth live without you for that long?"

"I think it just may have to." He lightly kisses your neck and rubs at the small of your back.

"I love you, you know?"

"Rumors have speculated." He smiles. "I love you..."

You put your finger to his lips. "Shh," you kiss his shoulder, his chin, then his mouth.

Rupert kisses your cheek and then moves his mouth to your ear and sings softly. "Floating, falling, sweet intoxication. Touch me, trust me, savor each sensation. Let the dream begin, let your darkest side give in, to the power of the music that I write. The power of the music of the night..."
