Giles

What Remains

by Kazza and GylzGirl

'What a stupid way to die,' you think to yourself as you sway back and forth, carried half-conscious over the shoulder of a 6 foot tall Gryptyr Demon as its mate keeps step beside it. From what you've been able to glean from the conversation, he forgot completely about their anniversary and she was royally upset. To make it up to her, he promised her a virgin sacrifice to the Hellmouth Demon and then a moonlit picnic on the beach. You just happened to be walking along, on your way to Rupert's, wearing a white dress. Despite your fervent protestations of non-purity, your outfit was enough to convince the simple-minded but obnoxiously strong nether-creatures that you were indeed untouched. One bonk on the head later, you awoke to find yourself here. You vaguely realize that you're being carried over the threshold of the ruins of Sunnydale High. Somehow you always suspected you'd die here, but once it had blown up you thought maybe you were imagining it.

Once inside, your lumbering abductor makes his way steadfastly toward the former library. By the sight of charred and broken bookcases around you, you know you've reached your destination. You take a deep breath and as the demon holding you leans over to kiss his honey, you bend your leg at the knee and kick them both in the head. Startled, the demon lets go of you and you fall over his back, barely bracing yourself with your arms as you land hard on the ground.

You try to scramble out of the way when you feel the Gryptyr's shadow looming over you. Just as you're sure it's about to grab hold of you, you hear the sound of a gun ring out. Your head snaps up just in time to see the male Gryptyr sail backwards from the blast and plummet down the giant hole in the floor that led to the Hellmouth. You turn to see the source of the shot and see Rupert Giles standing barely 3 feet in front of you. He smiles and points his rifle skyward as he extends a hand to you.

Before you can accept it, a horrifying scream echoes around the room. The two of you turn to see the female Gryptyr running for you. You hop to your feet, hoping to dodge out of her way. You are scarcely standing before she hits you full force and you both topple over the edge of the Hellmouth.

"No!!!!" You hear Rupert scream and scramble to the edge of the hole. You are barely maintaining your grip on the crumbling edge, the demon falling past you nearly knocking you loose and taking you with her. Just as your fingers lose their battle with the dirt clods beneath them, you feel Rupert's hand lock around your wrist and he begins to reel you back up.

The whole drama probably only took a few minutes but you swear Rupert leaves you dangling forever. At least long enough for you to see your life flash before your eyes. You make a mental note to call your Aunt and apologize for that atrocious Christmas present you gave her several years before as Rupert finally hauls you over the edge. He gathers your trembling form against him as you try to hold back the tears.

"There, there." His hands gently smooth back your hair, his comforting words finally breaking your defenses. "You were a very brave girl but it's all over now." Your tears wash away much of the dust gathered on his shirt as you sob away your terror.

You hiccup as you finally try to speak. "H-how did y-you know?"

You feel his smile against your forehead. "I thought I was the stutterer." You shiver as you realize how close you came to not hearing his adorable stutter again. The trembling of his body tells you he is thinking the same thing. "I-I don't know. I was preparing everything for us when I sensed something was wrong. I knew that you needed me. I barely remembered to get dressed before I ran out of the apartment."

You can't hold back a giggle at the image of a naked Giles running down the streets of Sunnydale with nothing but a gun in his hands. "I'm sure Ms. Kranston next door would have appreciated the view."

"I've told you before love. I'm not interested in her like that. She's a beautiful woman I admit, but she's not you. N-not that you aren't..."

You smile as you cover his mouth with your hand. "I know what you mean. And for the record I love you too. When I saw you standing there with that gun..." You are unable to go on.

Rupert kisses the palm of your hand before moving it away. "Makes one remember to tell our loved ones how we feel doesn't it?" You nod, your emotional roller-coaster draining the energy from you. Rupert notices. "Poor Love. I think I should get you home and to bed." He looks around, a wistful expression on his face. "So many good memories from the place. Many of them made with you." He sighs as he smiles down at you. "Perhaps one day, if you aren't too exhausted from being rescued from big ugly demons, we can make more."

You respond to the wicked gleam in his eyes with one of your own. You hook your hand to the back of his neck and pull him down. You pause just before your lips meet. "I'm not that tired."

Rupert sighs as he finally pulls away from your passionate kiss. He looks around the remains of the library, making you aware of the unsuitability of your location. A wicked smile crosses his lips as he spies something. Before you can turn to see what has his attention he brushes a quick kiss along your lips then lifts you.

"Rupert! I can walk."

"But then I wouldn't have an excuse to hold you in my arms." He walks around the hole in the floor and moves toward what used to be the stacks.

You brush your hand across the back of his neck. "Since when have you needed an excuse?"

Rupert looks down into your eyes, his own expression gentling. He strokes your lips once, twice with his own. "If I could, I would hold you safe in my arms forever."

Your breath catches at his loving words. You rest your head against his shoulder, wrapped in his loving protection.

Rupert stands still, slowly lowering your feet to the ground until you stand flush against him. "Remember that time?"

"Which time?" There'd been so many times for the two of you, in and out of this room. Yet you remembered them all.

He smiles. "When we were almost caught."

"Which time?" His smile turns wicked, equaling yours as you both remember how many times you were 'almost caught'.

"Ah yes. I'm still not sure if we were cursed with students with bad timing, or our own impetuous personalities."

You laugh at that. "Rupert love, I doubt if any of your Scoobies would describe you as impetuous."

"Ah, but they don't know me the way you do." At the knowing lift of his eyebrow, you feel yourself blush. He lowers his head until his mouth brushes your ear. "I was thinking of the time when Snyder followed Buffy into the library and we were hiding amongst the stacks."

You aren't sure if your shiver is from the warmth of his breath against your flesh, or the memory of that moment. As Buffy and Snyder had argued, Rupert continued in his lovemaking, his mouth capturing your cry of release. You still aren't sure Buffy wasn't aware of exactly where you were that day.

"You remember?" You nod at his question. "I thought this would be an appropriate farewell to our library."

You look around you, seeing not the charred remains, but the library as it was then. "Very appropriate." You wrap your arms around Rupert as he brings his lips to yours once more.

Neither of you are interested in gentleness this time. The combination of the fear you'd just experienced and your passionate memories make you eager for joining. You welcome his tongue into your mouth as the two of you fall to the floor. You feel his arousal press against you as he lays his body atop yours. Your hand in his hair, you shift to allow him free reign of your body. You moan as his hand massages your breast.

His lips move down your jaw and throat, pausing to nip at the pulse on your neck before continuing his journey down. The familiar touch of his tongue on your breast brings forth a second moan, one echoed by Giles. His hand moves to the button on your trousers as he continues to make love to your breasts. You lift yourself up so he can strip you, before his clothes join yours in a makeshift pillow under your head. He brings himself up, looking into your passion-glazed eyes. You gasp at the look of adoration on his face, welcoming him as he enters you. You whisper words of love as he takes you quickly, your joint cries of orgasm echoing in the remains of the Sunnydale High School Library.
