Oliver

Stakeout

by GylzGirl

Oliver waves at you from his car to let you know he is still awake. You are part of a blanket team assigned by your Employers to track down an important informant who has gone missing. The two of you have been given watch over his house. Oliver is stationed in his car, parked in front of the house. You are parked a little further up the block in order to be in site of both Oliver and the back door. So far, there has been no activity and the two of you have been passing the time placing obscene cell phone calls to each other.

As you are settling in for another unproductive hour, you see movement in the bushes near the back door. You double check your weapon, making sure it's fully loaded and exit your car as quietly as possible.

You don't have time to see whether or not Oliver observed your leaving and is following suit. You can now see a dark figure on the back doorstep, and it seems to be fiddling with keys to the door. You keep low, using the landscaping hedges for cover.

You manage to creep to within a few feet of the now obviously male figure. You take a deep breath and step out from the foliage. "Stop right there!"

Instead of freezing, the figure spins quickly and fires a gun you barely have time to see. You are propelled backward and off your feet as you feel the skin of your arm tear.

You hit the ground a little dazed but are able to make out Oliver's voice. "Drop the weapon and put your hands up on the door now. Don't try me. I'll have no problem using this tonight!" You blink your eyes open, looking up at the starry night. "Love, are you all right?"

"I'm fine," your voice is shaky. You sit up slowly, gingerly lifting your arm to assess the damage. Your sleeve has a large rip in it, and underneath that is a gash. However, it doesn't appear to be very deep and seems to have already stopped bleeding.

Now you are hearing two voices, both familiar but only one Oliver's. "Oh geez! Is she okay?"

"You could have killed her you bloody idiot!"

Soon Oliver is kneeling by your side, inspecting your arm. "It's nothing. It grazed me is all."

He pulls you against him and embraces you tightly. "Thank God." He kisses the top of your head. "It seems our wayward informant has wandered home."

You peer up at the figure in the dark. "Barry? Is that you?"

He kneels next to you as well. "I'm so sorry. Geez. I didn't know it was you guys."

"Where the hell have you been?"

"Our Mr. Simmons had a little romantic fling down in New Orleans to take care of," Oliver says.

The two men help you up. "That sounds nice."

"I didn't know it was you out there I swear. You just startled me."

"Barry, there's a reason you weren't given permission to carry one of those."

He hands the gun over to Oliver. "Don't worry. I don't ever want to touch one again. I never meant to hurt you guys." He smiles a little. "And if I was going to, I sure wouldn't have shot the pretty one."

"Barry, go home," Oliver smiles.

He stands and goes to his door, waving good-bye to you both as he enters.

Oliver puts his arm around your waist and begins to walk you toward your car. "Are you all right?"

"Yeah, hardly a scratch."

He kisses your cheek. "Could have been worse."

You turn and smile at him. "Yes. But it wasn't. I'm fully fit and ready for action."

He sweeps you up into his arms. "Let's test that theory."

Oliver runs as he carries you to the door of your car. He sets you on your feet there and opens your door. Just as he does, fireworks begin to go off overhead. When his gaze meets yours you loop your arms around his neck and kiss him tenderly. "Happy New Year Sampson."

He returns the kiss. "Happy New Year."

"Any resolutions?"

"Considering what just happened back there? Yes. I resolve that from now on when you wind up on your back, it will be because I put you there."

Just as you are about to question his meaning, he bundles you into the backseat of your rental sedan, crawls in on top of you and shuts the door. As the fireworks explode in the night sky and your car windows fog up, Oliver and you celebrate the new year.
