You sigh, your arm covering your eyes from the sun peeking through the leafy trees. At least you have a few days of normalcy. It would be perfect if only Oliver was here with you. Like he should be.
You don't notice the splash of an oar as another boat makes it way toward you. Or the two young people trying not to giggle. Your only warning is the slight rocking of your own boat as a man's weight presses on it. You jerk to a half-sitting position as you automatically reach for your ever-handy gun. Even on a day off, you must always be alert.
"Christ woman, what are you trying to do? Get us both wet?" The man's features are obscured by the sun at his back, but you'd recognise his voice anywhere.
"Oliver! Where have you been? And what are you doing?"
Waiting only for the two boats to finally stop rocking Oliver transfers his full weight from the other boat to your own. "Trying to surprise you." He waves at the now laughing couple. "With the help of my friends here. A surprise, which I might say, you almost ruined!"
You pout, not sure whether you should hug Oliver or push him into the river to punish him. "What did you expect me to do? Sneaking up on me like that. You of all people should know better."
He blushes as you both remember the lesson he'd taught you when you'd tried something similar. "You're right of course. And in my defence, it was the vision of you lying there in the sun that made me change my original plan of just calling out to you."
You know you just have to forgive him. It's not often he has the chance to do something sweet for you. "Come here you idiot."
He moves his body down beside you until your are both prone on the bottom of the boat. His poloshirt hides nothing of his figure from you, teasing you with just a hint of the soft hair you know covers his chest. You cuddle, neither wishing to ruin the moment. Finally your curiosity gets the better of you. "Why were you late?"
"Hmmm?" He'd been dozing. Poor baby, he never gets much of a chance to just rest. "Just finishing off a few loose ends. And planning another surprise." His cheshire smile shows he knows you'll be desperate to find out this new surprise. Your curiosity is your biggest bane.
You pout again. "You know I hate surprises."
"You know you like mine." He moves forward, pressing your lips with his own sun-kissed ones. "In the meantime, I'll just have to find a way to distract you won't I? Hmm?"
You smile against his mouth. "Well, Mr Sampson, I'm going to need lots of distraction. Lots and lots of it." He laughs as he covers your mouth fully with his own.
