GilesNaughty List Rules: The Long Version [Revised 03/15/2005]
Hello NAUGHTY-Person,
Welcome to the N.A.U.G.H.T.Y. list. Please take a moment to review this
message (you may even want to save a copy) because everyone who joins gets
it and it saves the "but I didn't know" discussion later on. To join this
list you are over 17. An adult. Be responsible. Know the sitch.
SECTION I: General Questions
1. What is GilesNaughty?
We are the proud, the sleep-deprived, the NAUGHTY. In the tradition of the Sunnydale Slayers (SunS), and Midnight Xenites, this is a list for a kind of sub-guild of Anthony Stewart Head fans. Those of us of a Night Owl persuasion. That doesn't mean you absolutely HAVE to be of the rampant insomniac breed that some of us can claim, you may have *shock* an actual job that prevents that, but if you prefer the night-life of a Watcher, you're in. Heck, if you're an ASH fan and just a really nice person, you're probably in as well :) It's a fic supportive, ASH loving, "What the heck is a semi-sane person doing up at this time of night?" kind of list.
2. What does GilesNaughty stand for?
Nocturnal Admirers Undergoing Giles Horny Thoughts Yum! The Giles at the beginning is to help find it in Yahoogroups searches and keep people just wanting an "adult" list with no clue about ASH from stumbling into it.
3. What are the requirements for joining?
You must be over 17. Right now, I don't ask for an age statement but if something about the way you post causes me to suspect you are younger, you will be asked for one and removed if you do not reply. You must read the rules for the list upon joining and save a copy for reference.
4. How do I subscribe/unsubscribe?
To SUBSCRIBE, go here: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/gilesnaughty/join. To UNSUBSCRIBE from this list, go to the Yahoogroups web site, at www.yahoogroups.com, and select the My Groups link from the menu bar on the top. This menu will also let you change your subscription between digest and normal mode. I believe it also lets you switch your subscription from one address to another.
Please DO NOT write the entire list with "unsubscribe me from this list" and so forth. If you do, it shows me that you never read the rules. You will be unsubbed, but also placed on ban, meaning you will not be allowed back on at any future date. The list members should not have to be bothered with the technical list things, that is my job. If you have a problem or question, write to me at gylzgirl@softcom.net.
5. Who runs the list and how do I contact them?
Tricia Stewart, aka GylzGirl is your List Mom. To send mail to the List Mom, send to gylzgirl@softcom.net.
6. How do I send mail to the list?
To send mail to the list, send to gilesnaughty@yahoogroups.com You must be a member or it will not go through.
7. Does the list have a homepage?
Now it does.
http://www.midnightlore.net/anthonyhead/shrine/inf-gnlist.html
8. Does the list have an archive?
At Yahoogroups yes. A private, members only archive. http://groups.yahoo.com/group/gilesnaughty
SECTION II: The List Rules
A: General Policies
1. Fanfic
We want your fic. We crave it. And as it is a list for 17+ year olds, we can accept fics rated all the way thru FRAO. Here are the guidelines for posting it to the list:
a. Required
The fic must feature a character of ASH's (Adam, Giles, Ollie, etc.) as the main character, or one of the main characters. You must include the standard disclaimers. It must have a rating. For smutty fics, you should identify the pairing [examples: Giles/Jenny, Giles/Buffy]. If the surprise of your pairing is important to your story then it should be marked Giles/?. Slash is allowed, but must be marked as such. Fics also require content warnings for some things (ie. Rape, BDSM, Character Death, etc.).
a1.. Ratings for Fanfic
In 2005 it was brought to the attention of the Giles fan community that the MPA was starting to crack down on fan archives using their rating system for motion pictures in the USA. Some fans created a Fan Rating system at http://tfrrs.tripod.com/. Since fandom is in constant danger of C&D letters, a few of us Giles list owners got together and agreed to adopt the fan rating system. Please rate the fanfics you post to this list by the following guidelines:
FRC - Fan Rated Suitable For Children
FRT - Fan Rated Suitable For Teenagers
FRM - Fan Rated Suitable For Mature Persons
FRAO - Fan Rated Suitable For Adults Only
What do the new ratings mean?
FRC - (formerly G/PG) Suitable for anyone. No swearing, only the mildest and
most general sexual references and violence. Yes, Bambi's mother may die and
someone can make a poopy joke, but nobody has genetalia and all limbs will
remain connected to the people they start out on.
FRT - (formerly PG-13) Suitable for anyone mature enough to watch Buffy the
Vampire Slayer. This covers anything that might be seen in an average
episode of the show. Very mild swearing is fine, as is some nudity and
moderate violence. Fade to black sexuality and frank discussion of sexual
concepts are fine here.
FRM - (formerly R) Suitable for older teens and adults. Your characters may
swear like sailors, have actual - albeit slightly fuzzy - sex, and get
really graphic with their violence. Sensitive subjects such as sexual
violence, torture, child abuse, etc. may be discussed frankly.
FRAO - (formerly NC17) Suitable ONLY for mature adults. This is where the
extrememly graphic sex and Kill Bill level violence live.
{Thanks to Sandra Pascoe, Wenchie, and Gail Christison for collaboration on the new rating system for the Giles lists)
Also if a fic spoils a certain episode or a few episodes, best to note that as well (this is mandatory for fics from a new show/episode in the week after it airs. See spoiler spaces rules for clarification).
b. Limits
Please limit your post size to no more than 25K per individual post. AOL turns anything much higher into an attachment and some people won't be able to read your fic that way.
On multi-part fics, you can post only 12 parts per fic per day. The exception to this rule is: If your fic is no greater than 20 parts, you may post it in total. Again, this rule is Per Fic Per Day. Please use common sense here. The online ASH community contains a lot of people who are cross-subscribed on numerous lists, if you're posting a long fic to many lists, spread out your posting a bit so you don't explode anyone's mailbox.
c. Other Fic Guidelines
Fics about Anthony Stewart Head, the actor, are not in and of themselves forbidden. However, fics featuring ASH, the actor, in a romantic way, are, and may result in disciplinary action. Feedback is not mandatory but will win you many happy friends :)
If you have a Giles fic oriented site, you may want to join the Guild of Giles Writers Webring.
2. Discussion
The list is for Anthony Stewart Head Fans. For discussion, the post needs to be about ASH, one of his roles, or one of the shows he's been in. We do allow general show (Ripper, Manchild, VR5, Buffy, Jonathan Creek etc.) discussion, but if the non-ASH threads wind on and on endlessly, the List-Mom reserves the right to put the thread to sleep (or in the case of really Angel-intensive threads, stake it). As to posts regarding the Angel series, as part of an ASH/BtVS intensive post, it’s okay. If ASH does a crossover, it’s ontopic. Otherwise it’s off-topic and doesn’t belong here. Please if you do include spoilerish things about it in your on topic ASH post though, follow normal spoiler rules for up through the weekend after it airs.
3. Spoiler Spaces
On show's that have ended, VR5, Highlander, Buffy, Angel etc. it is open game. Movies older than 2 years, open game.
For new shows, through the weekend after a new episode airs in the U.S.A. should cover those who work and must time-shift. After that, space is not required. Space is not required to discuss a repeat episode.
When posting discussion or spoilers about any new ASH appearances on UK shows (Little Britain, etc.) you must have the title of the show and the word "spoilers" in the subject header to warn those who don't wish to be spoiled not to read. Anyone who doesn't wish to be spoiled, that is your clue to delete. If you do not include the word "spoilers" in the subject, you MUST provide spoiler warnings and spaces within the post. If you wish to include warnings and space anyway, it is always appreciated.
One screen’s worth of spoiler space is usually enough, just long enough to protect someone who accidentally opens it from immediate spoilage. The warnings are also required for fanfics that spoil the episode up through the first week after it airs new, however, usually the disclaimers take up enough space that additional spoiler space is not required. Use your judgment. IMPORTANT: Speculation on upcoming shows/episodes based on rumors and such MUST include spoiler space! >{?
4. Off Topic Posts
This clutters member mailboxes unnecessarily. Limited OT posts regarding things relating to one of the shows ASH has been in will be allowed, up to the List Mom’s discretion. I reserve the right to kill a thread that goes on and on. OT posts not related to anything may result in disciplinary action. Use your common sense. If you're about to post something with OT in the subject line, look it over again and think about whether it really belongs on list. If you have something you are unsure of, or need to ask permission to post, write me at gylzgirl@softcom.net . I know the old adage that it’s easier to go ahead and do something and apologize for it later than to ask permission and risk being told no. That doesn’t work for me. I won’t look kindly on it. And if I do tell you no, I expect you as an adult to abide by that.
OT EXCEPTION:
As a worldwide list, we are also a community. This means that when things (terrorist attacks, natural disasters, etc.) occur, we may have listmembers in the affected area that the rest of the list will be worried about. You may use the list to check in and let your listsibs know that you are ok. You may also put out a request for any sibs you are particularly worried about in the affected area to check in with the list. This is because it involves people you come to care about by sharing the list with them. There is however not to be any discussion of politcal policy, religious correctness, or anything related to those kinds of topics. We just want to know that our friends are safe, that's all.
5. One Liners
This also clutters member mailboxes unnecessarily but I don’t want to have to come down hard about it. In small doses, on an occasional basis, they are harmless and can be quite funny. Things like "I agree." Or "Me too!!" don’t really help anybody though. Please if you only have one line to say, save it until you have more to say. You can also respond to many posts in one letter if you need to. Combining posts where possible reduces clutter. I reserve the right to enforce this rule more strongly should the need arise.
6. Advertising your website/mailing list/webring etc.
If you have a Giles/ASH/ASHBLF Website, you may post update notices about it ONCE A MONTH ONLY. If you have a Giles/ASH/ASHBLF mailing list or webring and want to post about it, great! By all means, please do a ONE TIME ONLY post. After that, please put it in your sig so that others may find you and check it out. If you have a general Buffy or Angel (The Series) site, mailing list or webring, please feel free to also let the list know, again ONE TIME ONLY. New members who have just joined can find out about your site from your sig, from the list archives at Yahoogroups, and the list's homepage. Repeated adverts waste bandwidth, clutter mailboxes, and cause not unwarranted complaints.
If you post about your site/list/webring more than the rules allow you to, you will be warned and possibly removed. If you feel you have a special situation that you need to post about, but it would mean you'd break this rule, you can write me if you'd like to ask permission (to save time, please include the URL in your request).
7. Relationshippers
This list is open to ALL Giles shippers. You may not agree with someone else's favorite ship. You can by all means state your opinions, HOWEVER, putting down supporters of another ship is NOT allowed. IMPORTANT: I also don't want anyone saying categorically that another ship is wrong. That is simply the opinion of the poster. Everyone here should be comfortable, with their preferences not being trampled on. Example: "I'm not a fan of Giles with Joyce." would be acceptable. "Giles and Joyce being together is just wrong and you’re sick if you think otherwise" will quite probably get you kicked off the list. Failure to comply with this rule may be grounds for removal, due to the fact that it tends to cause arguments and hurt feelings.
8. Spelling
Spelling errors on posts will be attributed to lack of sleep :) Try to minimize them on fics though as it does make it harder to get through.
9. Age
If something about the way you post causes me to suspect you are younger than 17, you may receive a letter from the List Mom requesting confirmation of your age. I would appreciate honesty. Failure to respond to that letter within a reasonable amount of time will be grounds for removal.
10. Swearing/Cursing
Cursing is not forbidden but is not appreciated in large doses. Use your common sense here. List-Mom reserves the right to send warnings to those who mistake the list for a profanity contest.
11. Requests for Beta Readers/Fic Help
If you need a Beta Reader, or you need a question answered for your fic, if it's an ASHBLF centered fic, feel free to send the request to the list.
12. On-List FanFic Feedback
Did you love a fic that was posted so much that you want to tell the whole list? That's great. However, for the feedback to go to the list it needs to be ENTIRELY complementary. Any criticism at all (and please always try to be constructive in those) needs to go to the author PRIVATELY.
13. Fic Challenges
Anyone is allowed to issue a fic challenge at any time so long as it clearly is intended to produce a fic where an ASH character plays the main/one of the main parts. The list now has a Challenge Archive up here: http://www.forbiddenwhisper.com/anthonyhead/shrine/gn/gnchal.html. If you issue a challenge on the list, it will probably be put up in the Challenge Archive pages. Any challenge you make is of course yours and you can take it wherever you like, but know that by posting it to the list, you give it permission to go to the Archive and stay there whether you are still a member of GilesNaughty or not. I call this the "I'm too lazy to have to go and overhaul the Archive every time somebody decides to break a list rule and then get snippy about it" clause.
14. Controversial Subjects
This list is not a forum for campaigning for your favorite political cause, debating the correctness of one's sexual preference, touting the superiority of your personal religion, demonizing the followers of other religions, or pondering the moral issues of abortion.
This is a fan list. A place to escape the topics listed above. You should be able to feel comfortable here in an atmosphere of tolerance. Religious discussion may come up due to the nature of BtVS. I can and will put a stop to any discussions of this type getting insulting and out of hand. Likewise, I don't want any political issues raised. Not even just a reminder to vote. This simply isn't the place for it. The only voting to be nudged onto the list is for polls about ASH related things.
C: Do's
1. Introductions
When you join, please be so kind as to write the list an introductory post so we can get to know everybody.
2. Kindness
Random acts of kindness are highly encouraged :)
D: Don'ts
1. Rudeness
Rudeness will not be tolerated. Being in N.A.U.G.H.T.Y. should inspire unity and warm fuzzy family feelings :). Like a family, there will be some relatives you love to bits and some you'd like to disown. Also like a real family however, when you're in your mother's house you will be at least civil to each other or you will be told to leave. Don't help the Hellmouth, be kind where you can.
2. Flames
Flames on-list or off-list about a list posting will get the flamer banned.
3. Spam
SPAM is not allowed. Don't even think it.
4. Chain Letters
If you send a CHAIN LETTER to the list, you're banned. Also, if you use addresses gleaned from this list to send CHAIN LETTERS out, and I find out (which isn't very hard to do), you're banned. For reference, I consider chain letters any letters that have some kind of negative consequence for not passing it on to other innocent folks. Chain letters are a pet peeve of mine. Don't risk it. Don't do it.
5. Attachments
Please do not send attached files or pictures to the list. If a story is too big to send in one message (usually that means anything over 20K), break it into parts. If you have a picture you want to share with us, please send the URL instead. Attachments run with them the risk of viruses, not to mention some browsers/servers just simply cannot view them. This list has been set up to automatically delete attachments so if you attempt to send one, it will not go through and could lead to the posting of blank posts.
6. Plagiarism
This is stealing somebody else's work and passing it off as your own. If someone can prove that you did it, you're banned.
7. Jokes and Virus Warnings
Please do not forward jokes to the list unless they are specifically about one of the shows ASH has done. Vampire jokes are not close enough. Please also refrain from sending virus warnings to the list. Most are hoaxes, which can be verified by going here: www.snopes2.com.
The exception to this rule would be if you personally have a virus and you need to warn others not to open attachments from you or something similar.
E: List ADMIN
1. ADMIN Warnings
The List-Mom reserves the right to send ADMIN warnings if situations call for it. It's not the end of the world to get one, don't behave as though it is. Rude responses to ADMIN warnings may be grounds for removal. Basically what this means is if you prove to me by being hateful that you can’t work through a situation, then I will take you off the list so that you are no longer my problem. It’s a List Mom sanity clause.
2. Death of a Thread
From time to time, the List Mom will "kill" a discussion thread. Sometimes it's because that thread has been consistently off-topic. Sometimes, it's to stop an argument. Killing a thread is entirely up to the List Mom's discretion. Any further conversation on a Killed thread will result in disciplinary action.
3. On-List ADMIN messages
Please open any messages in your box marked ADMIN immediately. If I am killing a thread, or if I'm addressing on list a matter that has been brought up by a violation of the rules, it will be marked as such. I try not to bring up on list, by name, any transgressors. I do however reserve the right to discuss the transgression on the list. It should not be taken as an attack. The exception to this rule is an On-List Flame. If someone executes one of these On-List attempts at humiliation, they are then subject to anything the List Mom feels like saying about it in public.
4. Criticism
If you disagree with how I have handled something, bring it up to me OFFLIST and be POLITE. I am human and screw up just like everyone else. I also have feelings like anyone else. Talk to me nicely and I will at least listen to your point of view. Be rude and I will consider it a flame, and just like if you flamed any other list member, you’re outta here. Did I mention it's a really good idea to be nice about it? Well it is.
5. Consequences
Consequences can vary from case to case depending on the severity of the infraction. After a listmember poll, the majority requested it be handled this way rather than my using the form letter method. If the first thing you do upon joining is break a rule, I may ban you right away (I mean, you just received the rules. There's really no excuse.) If you've gotten one admin warning and done nothing else wrong in six months, I will probably not consider your previous infraction against you in the future. I try to decide a fair and fitting consequence for the individual circumstances of the rule that was broken. The attitude of the list member who has broken the rule also goes a long way toward deciding what the outcome will be. It pays to be nice.
6. Counterpoints
a. But I didn't know that was the rule!
You receive the list rules upon joining, they are reposted to the list every now and then, and now they are posted at the List's homepage for reference. You're supposed to read them. If you don't, you accept responsibility for that.
b. But I didn't understand that rule!
My email address is gylzgirl@softcom.net. If you don't understand something, write me and ASK!
c. That's a stupid rule. I don't agree with it so I didn't feel I had to follow it.
It doesn't matter if you disagree with every single list rule I have. If you stay on this list, you have agreed to abide by them. If you have a real issue with a particular rule, you can write me at gylzgirl@softcom.net and we can discuss it. If you're civil, I will take your point under advisement. It may not change anything, but I will hear you out. I also hold frequent list polls to get everyone's advice when I'm thinking of adding or modifying a rule. Make sure to vote in these so that your opinion is counted.
d. I know I broke the rules repeatedly and never responded to any of the warnings you gave me, including that last one that said "If you do it again, you will be removed from the list". And then when I did it again, you banned me! You bitch! I'm going to let everyone know you banned me and pretend I haven't a clue why!
Yes, this happened. Just another of the wonderful and wacky pitfalls of running a list. I don't think I even have to dignify this here. I mainly include it for a little venting. Responses such as this will be passed out amongst my friends so that we can laugh at the utter stupidity of it.
Have fun, play nice, and remember, every once in awhile, get some sleep will
ya? :)
